Doing History: Methodology

The methodology of "doing history" is

  1. Choose a topic
  2. Locate primary sources
  3. Examine primary sources (see Case #1 below)
  4. Interpret sources from different perspectives (see Case #2 below)
  5. Understand the historical context - (see Case #3 below)
  6. Draw conclusions (connections to today)
  7. Present findings

A Sample Case: The Somerville Walking Tour

  1. 10th graders choose to create a walking tour of Somerville for 3rd graders
  2. They locate the destinations on the tour
  3. They travel to these locations and examine them.
  4. They create presentations for each location that interpret the location from different historical perspectives and situate the location in an historical period
  5. They draw conclusions about what their tour should consist of
  6. They lead 3rd graders from Somerville on their tour
